This year’s San Francisco event of AVON 39 – The Walk to End Breast Cancer took place July 11-12, with some of our very own participating. Michelle Lonaker, who has been walking the AVON 39 since 2003 and as part of the Heffernan Group AVON 39 team Ta-Ta Sisterhood since 2008, walked with teammates Jennifer Mahoney, Maria Hill, Toni Spicer, Carrie Johnson, and Kim Ecklin. Michelle led teammates through four to five months of rigorous training, all working up to the 39.3 miles that give the walk its name.
This year, the Ta-Ta Sisterhood raised over $11,000, with donations still coming in. While a few of our own walked the AVON 39, many more participated by donating to the team’s fundraising efforts. The group hosted a BBQ lunch at Civic Park in Walnut Creek that included a raffle, and Heffernan Group matched plenty of employee donations.
“The support from Heffernan and our employees has been amazing,” said Michelle Lonaker, Director of Philanthropy and the Heffernan Foundation. “Each walker reached their fundraising goal!”
Overall, the 2015 San Francisco AVON 39 raised $4.6 million, but it doesn’t stop there. The Ta-Ta Sisterhood will be walking in the New York event October 17-18, and it’s not too late to join—there’s still space and any level is welcome. Contact Michelle Lonaker, who will be happy to get you going with ways to fundraise, where to get your shoes (Athletic Outpost in Walnut Creek have been a big help to Michelle and teammates in finding the perfect fit to go the 39 miles), and how to set a training schedule.
Not up to walking just yet? You can still support the Ta-Ta Sisterhood and Heffernan’s efforts by making your way to Soda Popinski’s (1548 California St, San Francisco, CA 94109) at 6pm August 19th. Our walkers will be guest bartending to raise money for the NYC walk, with all tips going directly to the team’s fundraising. We hope to see you there!
Thank you to all Heffernan AVON 39ers and thank you to those who donated to fundraising efforts or volunteered.
